photo The Secret Club
By Cathy Shannon

One out of five women of reproductive age has had a legal abortion. Yet we rarely hear them talk about how the experience has affected them. In this video, six women speak candidly about how they made their decisions; about undergoing the procedure; about the support they received, or didn't receive, from others; and about the emotions they experienced afterwards. Some were tremendously relieved after the abortion, but others felt loss, grief, anger or depression. A nurse-practitioner and a crisis counselor discuss some common factors that may contribute to such reactions, and what women can do if they are having difficulty coping. This gentle, informative video will be useful for healthcare professionals and students, for women's health clinicians and counselors, and for women who are considering, or who have undergone, an abortion.
